It’s The End! The Back Of The Book Competition

When you’ve reached the end of a book, you close it and put it away. You’ve probably seen more of the front cover than the back cover. At least, if you’re like me and you put your book down so the front is visible in between reading sessions. And on blogs and online book stores you’ll only see the front cover of the book.

So, would you even recognize a book if you were given a picture of the back cover? That’s what this competition is about.

So, a competition! Tell me more!

  • Every week, one back cover of a book is pictured.
  • You have to guess which book you think it is – choose from 4 options.
  • The competition runs from January 1st, 2011 to June 30st, 2011.

At the end of the competition

  • The person that guessed right most often is the winner.
  • There will be a small prize for the winner, something local from the Netherlands most likely.
  • I will randomly draw the name of one participant who will win a book that was featured during the competition (I reserve the right to replace with a different book). Not everyone will have equal chances to win: you will be entered in the draw the number of times that you have played (even if you didn’t guess correctly). So, if you play every week, you have more chances of winning than someone who played only twice.

You are very much encouraged to enter book pictures for this competition:

  • You can’t play the week that your book is featured.
  • But it will count towards your total number of entries in the draw.
  • AND it will count as a correct guess for that week.
  • Please provide some information about your blog, so it serves as an advertisement for your own blog.
  • AND provide some information about the book on the picture so that people have something to go on.
  • Send in only pictures of books that have been first published since 2000 (no ARCS, galleys, etc.).
  • Send in only pictures of books that have been reviewed on your blog since June 1st, 2010.
  • I reserve the right not to place your picture or to edit your blog/book information.
  • People who do not enter a picture can still take part in the competition.

Did I forget to mention something crucial? Let me know and I’ll add it.

Call for Pictures

Given the advantages of entering a picture, you’re eager to send one in, right? That’s great. Please send your picture to: jh303015 at gmail dot com. Remember to take a picture of the back cover of the book, not the front!!

Please follow the guidelines above about the type of book that you can send in and further information.

Your picture doesn’t have to be perfect. It is nice if people can read the blurb on the back, but it can be interesting if it is not legible, too!

I will black out the ISBN number and all references to the writer and the title so it will be harder for people to guess.

Just for fun

To get you in the mood, guess which book this is the back cover of:

Guess_for_funIs this:

1. The Girl who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson?

2. A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Tolz?

3. The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver?

4. The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney?

Join in the fun! Let me know if something needs further explanation.

  1. Great quiz! I recognised the first three in the row above just from the thumbnails. I think I must study the back covers a bit too much πŸ™‚

  2. This is a great idea! I recognize the book you have featured just for fun because I reviewed it recently on my blog. (It’s a great book!) I see that you reviewed it on July 13…

Does that mean that the back book covers that you feature in this competition that don’t come from other people will all be books that you’ve reviewed since June 2010 too? (I hope that wasn’t a totally confusing question!)

    • leeswammes says:

I guess that’s what it means, avisannschild. I hadn’t given it much thought. I do hope I get enough entries so I don’t have to feature too many of my own books. πŸ™‚

Do get your camera out and take a picture of a recent book!

  3. Bella says:

    I love this competition!

The book is : #3. The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver

  4. raidergirl3 says:

This looks like fun! I’ll get organized in a few days. I think I know what book that is, although I haven’t read it yet.

  5. Rachel says:

  7. Novroz says:

    Interesting competition πŸ™‚
Will grab my camera as soon as I have a free day.

Does it have to be books after the year 2000? hmm…I have to carefully find the right one

    • leeswammes says:

Great you’re joining in with a picture, Novroz! I thought after 2000 is best, as there are so many books around in the world, if we set a date limit there is some chance that you’ve heard of it. πŸ™‚

  8. Novroz says:

I have 1 book on my mind already…but that’ll be an easy book to guess πŸ˜‰

Is J-lit okay? I’ll try capturing the famous ones like Haruki Murakami or Natsuo Kirino

  9. Fun! I recognize it as The Lacuna!

  10. pburt says:

Fun – it is the Lacuna by Kingsolver.

  11. Young1 says:

#3 The Lacuna – the only other i recognised was stieg larsson as i have read it one too many times!

  12. Katrina says:

The Lacuna! Great book πŸ™‚ Love your tweets – and your blog!

  13. Darn it, just got a back of the book image all ready for you and then noticed the rule that it has to be one I’ve reviewed on my blog. Will go raid the shelves again!

    • Leeswammes says:

Oh, that is a pity. We have to stick to the rules, though. πŸ™‚

But anyway, nice that you’re entering a cover. I have a few more, but a few more weeks and I’ll be out of covers, so I’m looking forward to yours.

  14. LindyLouMac says:

This looks like fun I should join in maybe. I guessed this one as The Lacuna as well. πŸ™‚

    • Leeswammes says:

Absolutely, LindyLou, join right in! It doesn’t matter that you missed a few weeks. You can play as often or little as you want. Hope you got it right… πŸ™‚

  15. Sorilla says:

    Great idea and fun!

I have’t reviewed any books on my blog yet, so I can not submit a back cover ;(, but certainly I will be watching for those submissions on your blog. Exciting…..

    Good luck!!!

  16. Carol Wong says:
