Reading for Week 5

This week, we read the following

Section III The Part About Fate

5.  Pages 292-349 (57 pages) April 2nd

Read until the end of this section.

My summary (may contain spoilers)

Oscar Fate meets an Mexican journalist, Guadalupe Roncal. She wants to report on the story of the missing/murdered women, a topic that interests Fate.

He spends some of his time with Chucko Flores, another Mexican journalist, who, like Ftae, has to report on the boxing match. Through him, he meets some other people, amongst which is Rosa Amalfitano, the daughter of the man we met in Section II.

After the boxing match, which is easily won by the American, Oscar goes drinking with Chucho and his friends, at several different places. They end up at someone’s home, where Oscar watches a porn movie. He doesn’t like some of the people there, and decides it’s time to leave.

Oscar is interested in Rosa and goes to find her after which they sneak out.

Rosa tells Oscar about how she met Chucho Flores and about their relationship. Flores is inconsistent, sometimes very kind, while other times he treats her as his slave. When her father meets Flores, he doesn’t approve, he thinks she’s better off without him.

In Oscar’s hotel, he hears from the receptionist that the police are after him, and together with Rosa, he escapes to the US.

Discussion

This part luckily picked up for me again. I liked reading about Rosa. She seems sympathetic if a bit naïve. Of course, I also liked it that the story linked up with Section II about Amalfitano. Even the book hanging on the washing line was mentioned again.

I guess in the next section, about the crimes, we’ll be back in Santa Teresa, as this is where the crimes are taking place. Unless there are some other crimes, too.

I’m happy to read on again. For the last 2 weeks or so, I found the story a bit flat, and I wasn’t really interested. Now I’m keen to read what’s happening next.

Discussion questions

Do you agree the story is picking up speed here?

Why do you think the police are after Fate?

Do you think Fate and Rosa will stay together? Or will Rosa do what her father says and go to Spain?

I guess we will only find out about this indirectly, as the story continues with different characters (I’m assuming).

Next week (Week 6)

This week, we’ll read the following

Section IV The Part About the Crimes (4 weeks)

6. Pages 353-424 (71 pages) April 9th

Read until: “In November, on the second floor of a building under construction…”

What did you think of this week’s read?

I found this book in my local Waterstone’s sale box today for just £7.99 but me being an Amazon junky checked and it was cheaper there! Result – i think i will invest.😀

I bought my copy for about 2 pounds in Tesco’s last year. Amazing how such big books can cost so little. I hope you’ll enjoy it. Don’t be put off by the long sentences in the first section!🙂

Love this book in fact the author is one of the reasons I started blogging, although my favourite is Last Evenings on Earth, a short story collection. If you’ve not started about the crimes section, I’ll give you a slight warning it gets a bit dark, as it pretty much just a catalogue of women murdered. But bear with the book
Ps. I remember seeing it cheap in Tesco’s but I already had my copy.

    • Leeswammes says:

Thanks for the warning, Parrish. As long as the women are murdered in interesting ways, the book will still be interesting to read.🙂

I’ve never read anything by Bolao before. I still haven’t made up my mind what I think of this book.

I agree with you that it was nice to see Rosa Amalfitano back again. The story definitely picked up speed after Oscar met her. I’m not sure why the police (if it is really the police) is after Fate, the last part was a bit confusing as well.
Somehow, I don’t think Rosa will depart for Spain that easily…

    • Leeswammes says:

Ah, it’s just not only me that didn’t understand why the police wanted to talk to Fate. Indeed, Chinoiseries, I hadn’t considered the possibility that it isn’t the police who is after him. Good point.

I posted on week 5 at my blog http://wp.me/p1aBQn-1hK

I also didn’t realise that it might not be the police who are after him. The story definitely picking up speed and is a little more interesting. I like Oscar Fate as a character, he seems to get things done and not worry too much about people’s opinions.

I love comments! Let me know what you think.
