Ugly Covers Competition – Week 4

Ugly Covers Competition at Leeswammes' Blog

It’s week 4 of the Ugly Covers Competition! Did you enjoy last week’s covers? If this is the first you hear about it, you are very welcome to join in the fun!

Presenting: 6 ugly covers!

Here is how it works:

  1. A number of my blog readers have sent in pictures of ugly covers (thanks!).
  2. 6 of these are presented here today.
  3. Choose the cover you find most ugly (cover 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6).
  4. Fill out the form.

Below the form is information about the books and the people that submitted them, as well as some further information about the competition.

Further information about the books

Cover 1 – My Sister, My Love by Joyce Carol Oates. Sent in by Lu of Lu’s Raves and Rants. She says: “I have not read it.  A friend of mine passed it on to me, and said it was good.”

Cover 2 – Mappa Mundi by Justina Robson. Sent in by Leslie of Under My Apple Tree. She says: “Nope, haven’t read it yet.  Mappa Mundi is one of the books on the 2011 Women of SciFi discussion list.”

Cover 3 – Catalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson. Sent in by Jordyn of Ten Cent Notes. She says: “This was the first book of hers I read and I did NOT read the edition with this cover. I have absolutely no idea what the cover has to do with the story (though granted, it has been like ten years since I read it) and the cover is just… confusing. Weird. Ugly.”

Cover 4 – Life Story by Alison Habens. My entry for this week. I didn’t buy this book for its cover! I had read and enjoyed two other books by this author. This book was slightly disappointing compared to the other two hilarious books.

Cover 5 – Girl’s Night Out by Kathy Lette. Sent in by Cindy of The Only Cin.

Cover 6 – No Love Lost by Margaret Allingham. Sent in by Dorte of DJs Krimiblog.

Thanks for your contributions, everyone!

Further information about the competition

Each week for 6 weeks, I will show you 6 covers and you have to choose the ugliest one. Every week there will be one winning cover (in case of a draw, I will have the final say). The seventh week, we’ll have the 6 winning covers back, and the most ugly, absolutely impossibly awful cover will win the competition. This book will have the questionable honor of being the ugliest book we know of.

Your task is to vote for the ugliest cover each week. Of all participants who chose the final, winning, cover in one of the first 6 rounds, one will win a book of their choice. Hopefully one of the books displayed will suit you (an awful cover doesn’t mean an awful book), and otherwise, you can choose any other book from the Book Depository (or other solution if the BD doesn’t deliver in your country) up to a maximum value.

I can still use ugly covers, so please look on your shelves and send in the most awful one(s): jh303015 at gmail dot com.

Do fill out the form! Anyone can enter!

Psst! Is there a cover here that you secretly like?

  1. Cindy says:

Voted and sending you another cover🙂

  2. Wow, so many more ugly covers! This was a real toughie but in the end one just pipped it – those girls look like bitches!😉

  3. Kristi says:

This one was tough. That child in the first one is really creepy. It looks like some sort of freaky chucky-like kid with strange body proportions. Yikes!

  4. Louise says:

Cover 1 is creepy, that child really looks like a doll!! I didn’t vote for that one though😉

  5. LisaG says:

    Voted – I still think that #6 is nasty🙂

  6. Novroz says:

Hahaha no surprise there!! book 2 from last week is so ugly.

  7. Lol, at the cover #2 from last week getting 12 votes. Wow!

This week, #1 is kinda ewww, creepy, what was Joyce Carol Oates thinking?

  8. Nadine Nys says:

They are all equally ugly/creepy… Hard choice, but number 5 ‘won’.

  9. tanabata says:

Hmm… so many ugly covers, it’s a difficult choice.

  10. Rikki says:

Agree with LisaG. No.6 is absolutely awful!

  11. This is fun!
But they are not as absolutely, totally ugly as those of last week.

  12. Sometimes I forgive seemingly bad covers as being relevant to the time period when they were published. I could have written off the Joyce Carol Oates cover as such (it’s got a very 60s/70s book art look to it) BUT it’s got a blurb mentioning “The Gravedigger’s Daughter” which was published in 1995. There is NO WAY this cover was considered attractive to anyone in the late 90s. It was bad then and it’s bad now!😉 It’s definitely got some competition, though. This week has some real doozies to pick from.

  13. Ugh. I can’t believe someone got paid to design these! And other people sat around and said, “Yeah, that’s the one!”

  14. Erin says:

This is my first time seeing this competition. What fun! Those are some seriously bad covers.

  15. Kinna says:

Participating for the first. I’m going to send you a couple of ugly covers. This is fun. That eye on Catalyst is really creepy.

  16. I didn’t find these all that bad, to be honest… certainly not compared to previous weeks!

  17. Leslie says:

Half of them are creepy and the other half ugly. Difficult to decide which I’d least like to be seen with!

I love comments! Let me know what you think.
