Ugly Covers Competition – The Finals

Ugly Covers Competition at Leeswammes' Blog

It’s the final week of the Ugly Covers Competition! Did you enjoy last week’s covers? If this is the first you hear about it, you are very welcome to join in the fun!

This week we’re chosing the ugliest of the ugly covers. For six weeks I’ve shown you 6 ugly covers each week. The winners of each week are now going to fight it out – which cover is the ultimate ugly cover?

There’s a book to be won: all people that chose the final winning cover during the past 6 weeks will be entered in a draw for a book prize – you can win any book of your choice, but preferably one that was featured (you can choose a different cover if available!).

I’ll first give you the results of last week. Then, the pictures of the 6 winners. Choose the most ugly one!

Last week: The results!

Covers 1, 2, and 3:

Further information about the books

Week 1 – Hers by A. Alvarez. Submitted by Cindy of The Only Cin. She never finished the book.

Week 2  Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse. Sent in by Anna of Anna’s Leesreis. She says: “This cover (wrongly) suggests soft-porn and it’s very ugly.”

Week 3 – Crazy in Love by La Tonya West. Sent in by Lena of Lena Sledge’s Blog. She says: “I was sent a link to buy Crazy in Love by La Tonya West on Amazon once and I gave it the side eye. Although I was told it was a really good book despite the cover.”

Week 4  My Sister, My Love by Joyce Carol Oates. Sent in by Lu of Lu’s Raves and Rants. She says: “I have not read it.  A friend of mine passed it on to me, and said it was good.”

Week 5  – Abarat by Clive Barker. Sent in by Her Royal Orangeness of Only Orangery. She didn’t read it.

Week 6  – The Human Race by O. C. Heaton. Sent in by Leeswammes (me!).

Next Week

Next week (on Thursday) I’ll announce the winning book and the winner of a book of their choice out of the participants that correctly predicted (in the first 6 weeks) which book was the most ugly.

Also next week: another giveaway! The author of one of the 6 winning books has kindly offered to provide copies of his ugly book as well as a Kindle edition with a new cover. This is world-wide for both the printed and Kindle editions.

So do check back next week for the ugliest of ugly covers and for a new giveaway!

Do fill out the form! Anyone can enter!

Psst! Is there a cover here that you secretly like?

  1. I need to go away and give this some consideration – they’re all pretty vile😉

  2. Louise says:

I can’t believe it’s come to an end…the weeks have flown by! I too need time to mull this over😉

  3. Wow – the worst of the bad. Great competition Judith! This has really been a lot of fun every week!

  4. Wendy Sice says:

After much pondering, I have to say book 6 because I can’t stand anything that resembles vomiting! Although, Clive Barker’s runs a close second. Eww!

  5. Louise says:

Still can’t make my mind up, i’m torn between 3, 5 and 6…..

  6. Emma says:

This is so funny. I don’t know all the books but whoa, do that to Hesse and Scott Fitzgerald, that’s so unfair.

We’re just discussing the difference of marketing the same book according to the country over at my blog.

    • Leeswammes says:

Thanks for your comment, Emma. Unfair? I don’t know. It’s not a competition to make author look silly. Just a bit of fun.

I’ll have a look at your blog, sounds interesting!

      • Emma says:

I didn’t mean you. You’re right to point at those ugly covers.
I meant the publishers: they do no justice to the books they sell with those covers.

      • Leeswammes says:

Emma, I think some of these covers are quite old, so maybe it was a good choice at the time. But others…! Very bad choices.

  7. Erika says:

For me the worst were week 5 and 6. I wish I could have chosen both! I secretly don’t mind My Sister, My Love. I like the colours and even though the picture is completely disjointed I actually like the art style. I must have weird taste if that’s the ugliest for that week! I really enjoy your competitions. I hope you will continue doing them in the future. Whatever topic you choose it’s always fun.

  8. Nadine Nys says:

I knew it would he hard to choose, they are all so really ugly. Okay, I will make my choice now…

  9. mamabunny13 says:

    Yep! They’re still ugly!😛

  10. Rikki says:

Stiff competition! I still go with Clive Barker, that thing/person/creature is so repulsive, everything else is harmless compared to it.

  11. Kinna says:

Pretty hard to choose. I;m just amazed at these truly vile covers. Torn between 3,5 and 6.

    • Louise says:

I’m also torn between 3, 5 and 6. 5 is ugly but doesn’t repulse me at all. 6 I don’t like, it’s horrid but if I were to be seen out in public with one of these covers it’s 3 that I wouldn’t want to be seen with. I’ll make my decision Judith, I’ve had to sleep on it😉

      • Leeswammes says:

It’s difficult, Louise. In fact, since I’m not voting, I decided to keep an open mind myself. I don’t have any preferences.🙂

  12. Nish says:

Ughh! I guess I am prudish, but those sex covers are just too much for me. Do books with such covers actually sell? I would have to cover it with wrapping paper before I even bring it out to read😀

    • Leeswammes says:

Nish, I can’t imagine that people will pick up these books based on the cover! You have to have heard really wonderful stories about the books before you would try them, don’t you think? It’s amazing what kind of covers are out in the world.

  13. Novroz says:

    I missed last week’s competition😦
Wow that misery cover is ugly
