Mid-Winter’s Eve Giveaway Hop
December 21, 2011 114 Comments
The Mid-Winter’s Eve Blog Hop runs from December 21st until December 27th and is hosted by I Am A Reader Not A Writer and Oasis for YA. All participating blogs (over 200!) are giving away a book, a book voucher, or something else book-related.
If you’re new here: welcome to my blog! I read contemporary fiction, a bit of chick-lit, some thrillers and science fiction, and whatever I can get my hands on. To enter my giveaway you do not have to be a follower, although if you like my blog, please consider following by email or RSS.
My giveaway is via Book Depository so if they deliver to your country, you can enter (check here).
One winner can choose one paperback book from the following selection, some of my favorite books (click on the picture for my review):
- The Sandalwood Tree by Elle Newmark. Historical fiction. A wonderful, atmospheric story about an American woman moving to India in 1947 with her family who finds some old letters of the previous occupants of her house.
- Good to a Fault by Marina Endicott. Contemporary fiction. A woman who drives into a homeless family’s car takes them in after the mother of the family has to spend some time in hospital.
- The Radleys by Matt Haig. Contemporary fiction with a vampire twist. A vampire family lives a middle class village life in England. The two children don’t even know they’re vampires, until a bloody event happens….
- The Passage by Justin Cronin. Post-apocalyptic fiction. After some modified humans escape a laboratory, no-one’s life is safe any more. These creatures kill or infect any one in their way and the civilization as we know it collapses.
To win the book of your choice
- Required: let me know in the comments which book you’d like to win and why you think you’ll like this book. Your entry only counts if you do exactly that.
- Get another entry by tweeting about the giveaway. Paste the link in your comment (or in a new comment) – if you don’t know how to do that, make sure you use “@leeswammes” in your tweet and I’ll find it back (do mention in the comments that you tweeted).
- Maximum of 2 entries per person (one comment, one tweet).
- Anyone can enter, as long as the bookdepository delivers to you.
- You do not have to be a follower of this blog, but don’t let me stop you pressing the RSS or Email button!
- I reserve the right to remove double entries or entries where foul play is suspected.
- The winner will be chosen randomly.
- I will notify the winner by email. The winner has 3 days to get back to me with their mailing address or I’ll choose a new winner.
- Good luck! And don’t forget to visit the other giveaways in this blog hop.
Thanks for the giveaway! I’d like to win The Radleys–I’ve heard good things about it and read the first few pages, and I like the writer’s style.

Count me in for “The Radleys” – I still remember your review from a while ago and as I’m not much for “normal” vampire stories this one sounds so unique that’d love to read it!
The Radleys; English vampires 🙂

Happy Christmas!
The Sandalwood Tree please. Like the background setting very much.Thank you for sharing.
You always find the most amazing blog events to participate in! I wonder if it’s too late for me to sign up.
I hope you are having a wonderful week, will you stay home for the holiday’s?
You could check whether you can still sign up, Mari. My week is nice and quiet except I seem to be buying much much more than I was planning to (presents, food, things for myself). We’ll be at home for Christmas.
I’d like to win The sandalwood tree, because I love historical fiction and getting to know other countries and cultures.
I’ll tweet it as well!
Thanks for the giveaway,
Katrien
I would like The Sandalwood Tree, because I love stories that expose me to different cultures!
Thank you!
Hey Judith,
I’d like to be entered for The Radleys. I have had my eye on this book for a while, since it received so many glowing reviews.
Thanks for the giveaway! I think The Sandalwood Tree looks quite interesting – I love historical fiction.

I’d love to win Good to a Fault by Marina Endicott. I love reading heartwarming and cozy contemporary fiction books for relaxation. Good to a Fault sounds good (no pun intended). 🙂
I tweeted. My Twitter handle is @EvangelineHan. I mentioned you in the tweet.
I would like to go for the Radleys. Love those kind of stories and I love England, nice combination 🙂
Wish you a lovely holidays!

I would love to read ‘Murder on the Down Low’ by Pamela Samuels Young. She is a new author and still has a legal career. I loved her book, “Buying Time”. I was so impressed that I e-mailed a thank you letter for writing it and she e-mailed back. I think she is a great writer and hope that more people read her books.
CarolNWong(at)aol(dot)com
Carol, for this giveaway, you can only win one of the four books above. But thanks for the recommendation.
Gee, goofed again! I would prefer to read “The Sandlewood Tree”. I am fascinated by India and love
to read historical fiction.

Thanks for this giveaway, Judith. When I saw that The Passage was among the books I could win, I had to participate. I read so much good reviews about this book, and when I saw your review, I knew for sure I wanted to read it. So, thanks!

I have retweeted your tweet about this giveaway (more than once), but I cannot find the retweet (Twitter seems to be not working correctly, at the moment).
I’m a suckler for a vampire book, so I’d chose The Radleys.

Happy Mid-Winter, Judith! Thanks for having this giveaway.
I have to read THE PASSAGE because I listened to the abridged version last October so missed large sections. Have to be up to speed when THE TWELVE comes out. Althoug,h THE RADLEYS also sounds excellent.
I love how you can click on the book cover to go to the review. I’ve been trying to figure out how to do that as well. Would you be willing to share some of your secrets?
Thanks again!
Chris
nerfreader at gmail dot com
Chris, I don’t see the use of abridged audio books really. I’m looking forward to the sequel to The Passage too.
Your question: in wordpress, when you add a picture to your blogpost you can specify a URL. Standard, this is already filled in and links to the jpg of the picture, but you can change this to anything you like. You didn’t leave your blog address so I don’t know if you have wordpress, too.
Thanks!
Thanks for the nice giveaway. I would like Good to a Fault or The Sandlewood Tree. Both sound like books I would enjoy. Merry Christmas!
i would love the RADLEY and then i would love t read and blog on it Mid-Winter’s Eve Giveaway Hop thanks for the hop and this was on the hop

I’d like to win the Passage because I’m a total fantasy/SF nut. You can get humor, mystery, adventure, romance, etc, along with the mental stimulation. Anything without the fantastic elements bores me. Here’s my tweet: https://twitter.com/#!/SherAHart/status/149665566725115905
Thanks for the giveaway. I would love to have The Sandalwood Tree as it is set in my part of the world. I love historical fiction and am intrigued by the fact why would anyone want to come to India in 1947. It was the year of great happiness (the independence) but also great tragedy (the partition). I lalso ove bboks where the past seems to co-exist with the present.
Merry X’Mas.
The Radleys has been on my wish list since you first posted your review. Not only the premise appealed but you spoke so well of it and I trust your judgement
Thanks for the giveaway – Merry Christmas

I would love the passage. Dystopian future novels are my fav. They so often show how power and fear of the unknown corrupt society.
deanna_boocock@hotmail.com
The Radleys by Matt Haig. It has vampires, looks like a mystery, probably has a ‘twist’ in it. Sounds like my type of holiday read! 🙂
What a lovely giveaway.
I would love to read The Sandlewood Tree. I know it had good reviews on the blogs this year. I love historical fiction and am quite partial to stories that include letters or diaries.
carol
I’d love to win The Passage because people have been saying great things about it for a while and because it sounds kind of like the film 28 days later, which I love! 🙂
Yay! Christmas! I’d really like to read The Radleys since they made it sound so good on The TV Book Club. Thanks for the giveaway!
I also tweeted this but can’t remember how to do the link thing.
I’d like to try for The Passage. Lately the apocalyptic zombie theme has arisen on the C-Realm and the Arch Druid Report, a podcast site and a blog that I follow. The topic would be a new one for me to dip into, but having recently moved to Japan to live, and coped easily, I reckon I could handle it! BTW, Lee, your review seems to be miss-linked to The Radleys
Thanks for entering Hadashi. The Passage is a great book even if I’m not a zombie/vampire lover.
Thanks for pointing out the problem with the link. I ‘repaired’ it.
The passage. It has been at the top of my TBR list, since it came out. I have heard it is really good.

The sandalwood tree – I’m interested in other people’s experiences of living overseas
I’m sure you are, Yvette. Nice to see you entering!
I would like to read The Passage because I’ve heard it’s thought provoking and disturbing. And I love big fat books, they’re better, steadier companions than the thin ones.
Thanks for the opportunity! I’d love a chance to win The Sandlewood Tree.

But why, Kristy? (See Rule 1 above). 🙂
Good to a Fault sounds like a heartwarming tale. Good reason to read, I think.
Oh, I’d like the Sandalwood Tree. Because so much fiction set in India stereotypes and exoticizes the country, but this one sounds different from your review.
I’d like to win The Radleys. You rated the book with 5 stars. That’s one reason. But I’ve read some vampire books last year and I really do like it. So….vingers crossed
Forgot to mention, but I tweeted this giveaway also 🙂
I would love to read Good to a Fault. From looking it up on goodreads, it sounds like a book I would really enjoy, and your review has convinced me that I really should read it!
Thanks for the entry! Happy Holidays!
What a great thing to do, Christmas giveaways all through the blogging community. I’d like to opt for Good to fault. I always like to read how people deal with hardship. I’ll tweet your post in a sec.
And seeing I am allowed to entrie my second choice would be The Sandalwood Trea, since historic novels always interest me. A second tweet will be done. 🙂
Gerda, you can only win one book, but your name will now be counted twice when I randomly select a winner. It’s like buying two lottery tickets. 🙂
Thanks for entering!
I didn’t expect to be able to win two books……, LOL! That would’ve been a bit greedy… 😉
Tweeting is done…

I’d love to win the The Sandlewood Tree. I love Historical novels, it takes me back to a different time and makes me wonder how life at that time was really like. 🙂 the blurb and your review is really captivating.. will be adding it to my TBR list. 🙂
Thanks for the giveaway!! 🙂
I completely missed this midwinter’s eve giveaway hop! Glad I made it in time 🙂 I’d love to read The Passage, as you gave it 5/5 stars and it’s a dystopian look at vampires, closer to literary fiction than YA (which I tend to avoid). I think it’s on my to-read list somewhere, but I definitely have considered getting this one.
I would like The Radleys… I like to read anything with vampires so I am sure I will like this one…

Thanks for having a cool giveaway. I have been thinking hard for 2 minutes and 34 seconds. The Sandalwood Tree intrigues me because it is historical fiction set in India – a story where one culture is stuck into another. The Passage also looks good because i always enjoy post-apocalyptic stories and I always enjoy seeing how the author unravels the world and tries to put it back together.
thanks for the giveaway.. i would like the The Radleys by Matt Haig, i think it’s a great book and i love vampires.. 🙂

I’m honestly torn btwn:
. The Sandalwood Tree : I’m originally from India and am drawn to books about India and/or by South Asian authors. I’ve heard and seen some movies about the struggles during the partition. This story sounds fascinating and the genre, historical fiction, is a new one for me.
. Good to a Fault : The story is compelling and could actually happen. The premise is thought-provoking.

I think I’d like to enter this give-a-way of yours. Please put my name down for The Radleys, that book sounds fascinating. I’ve been reading lots of different variations on the vampire story in the recent past, and this sounds like a completely new twist again which makes the book very tempting. I’ll be tweeting about your give-away as soon as this comment has posted. I think you know where to find my tweets, LOL
the passage, why? i love horror books , actually everything with twist of horror is on my list!
thanks!
OK…you got me! I would like to enter for The Radleys. After reading your review, I really thought it fit what reading mood I’m in right now. I’ve had an abysmal reading year (I feel like I haven’t liked most anything I’ve read) so I definitely need some fun reading and this seems like it would fit the bill.
