Blogoversary & Giveaway

Blogoversary

It’s my blogoversary! Leeswammes’ Blog has been going strong for 3 years. I have been having such fun with book blogging. I’ve met a lot of people, online but also in real life. I’ve been to bookish events, reviewed lots of books I might not have got my hands on if I weren’t a blogger. All perks!

The downside? It costs time. I have spent a lot of time on my blogs and it’s a great hobby to have. Sometimes I take it a little too seriously and insist (on myself) to publish a post every day/ every other day / four times a week, whatever. But with over 850 followers, how can I not?

Some stats: I’ve posted over 1,100 blog posts, and had 225,000 hits in those 3 years.

My favorite post of all times was one that I published quite early on in my first year: Dystopia for Adults – A Reading List. I’ve been planning to extend the list and you can help! Read the post and suggest a book that’s not on the list – as an extra entry to the giveaway. Yes, there is a giveaway!

Giveaway

What am I giving away? A book, up to €15/$20/£13, from the Book Depository. But not just any book! Choose a book that I have reviewed and that I gave 4 or more stars to. You can see my earlier reviews (2010/2011) HERE and the more recent ones HERE. I haven’t updated the latter list in the last few weeks, so if you find a recent review that fulfils the star criteria, that’s fine, too.

Anyone can enter, even if you have no dystopia book suggestions. Read the rules below and enter in the comments.

How to win:

  1. Anyone can enter. You do not need to have a blog and the giveaway is international as long as The Book Depository delivers to your country.
  2. Leave a comment with your chosen book as outlined above. Fill out your email address where it asks you to. This will not be shown in your published comment.
  3. For an extra entry, tweet about this giveaway and leave your tweet link (or your twitter handle) in the comments.
  4. For two extra entries, mention in your comment the title and author of a dystopian book for adults, that is a) not on my list already, and b) not mentioned by any of the other commenters.
  5. You can earn a total of 4 entries: one free entry, one for tweeting and two for adding to the dystopia list.
  6. You do not have to be a follower or become a follower, although if you like my blog I hope you will! You can follow by email or by RSS (see buttons in the side bar on the right).
  7. You can enter the giveaway until Monday, 22 April 2013.
  8. I will notify the winner by email. The winner needs to answer my email within 3 days, or I’ll announce a new winner.
  9. Also read the small print below, please.

Good luck!

  3. Ooh a very happy blogoversary to you. I have three recommendations for your dystopia list. I have reviewed the following 2 books in the last 12 months. Nod by Adrian Barnes (recently shortlisted for the Clarke Awards), about a world where insomnia causes humankind’s slide to oblivion. http://wp.me/p1yoK9-eS and I Have Waited and You Have Come by Martine McDonagh a dystopian thriller http://wp.me/p1yoK9-nu both really good. I would also like to recommend The First Century After Beatrice by Amin Maalouf which I know Jackie at Farmlane Books reviewed not long ago. It’s a vision of our future in a gender unbalanced society.
I’m stuck between two books you’ve reviewed. Blindness by Saramago and The Crysallids by Wyndham. I promise to make up my mind if I’m chosen!
Good luck with the future of your blog!
    Sarah

Happy Blogoversary! Seems like it was only yesterday.

A few of your reviews show up on my to-read list. The Starlite Drive-in by Marjorie Reynolds would be my pick if I had to narrow it down to one. Although There Was An Old Woman is running a close second.

Three of my favorite dystopian novels (gasp) aren’t on your list. And all are post-apocalyptic nuclear annihilation of one type or another.
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick
A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.
    The Postman by David Brin

  5. Susanna P says:

Happy blogoversary, and thanks for the giveaway! I’d probably go for The Snow Whale or The Miracle Inspector (but maybe The Orchardist or The Lifeboat instead? Choices, choices.)

One of my favorite H.G. Wells novels is also a dystopia, The Sleeper Awakes (alternately, When the Sleeper Wakes). I also recently enjoyed The End of This Day’s Business by Katharine Burdekin and the newly-translated A Voyage to Kazohinia by Sandor Szathmari. All oldies but goodies.

  6. Jennifer says:

  13. First of all congratulations on your blogoversary. You have a great blog and I love reading here.
I would love a chance to win the Starboard Sea by Amber Dermont.
My tip for adult dystopian is Jasper FForde’s Shades of Grey

  14. Rikki says:

    Happy Blogoversary, Judith!
I’d like to win The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton.

    Tweet: https://twitter.com/Ailuah/status/323357678170681344

No suggestions unfortunately, I don’t read dystopia. 😦

  15. Mary Preston says:

    Congratulations!!

I’d love to read: The Winemaker by Noah Gordon

Adult Dystopian: This Dark Earth by John Hornor Jacobs
The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway

I would love to win Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.
    Some adult dystopia titles:
    – Corpus delicti by Juli Zeh ( although I know you didn’t like that book)
    – Anthem by Ayn Rand

    Thanks

Hello, happy blogoversary! I would love to read Strangers on the 16:02 by Priya Basil.
1 I have tweeted to share the giveaway, https://twitter.com/CeriKay/status/323362688262610944.
I am currently reading City of Bohane by Kevin Barry, it feels dystopian to me!!!

  18. Happy blogoversary, Judith! You are such an inspiring example, reading so many books 🙂
I would love to read The Night Circus, which I haven’t managed to read yet.
What I can recommend, as a dystopian book which I loved is Atwood’s The handmaid’s Tale and if you have read it, then Kafka’s Trial is definitely worth reading.

  19. Judith Congratulations for another blogging milestone. I’d like to have a copy of The Obituary Writer, by Ann Hood.

  20. Isa says:

Happy Blogoversary! The stats are amazing and I hope it continues on for years to come. 😀 I would love to read The Night Circus or The Casual Vacancy. They both sounds like fantastic reads. I’m not sure if you’d want to add graphic novels to your list but a great adult dystopia is V for Vendetta. Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson is definitely a fantasy but it has dystopian society. You can try A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, I haven’t read the book but I watched the movie. It was a great, deeply disturbing movie.

    Happy Blogaversary

IPlease could I choose A Land more kind than Home if I’m lucky; thanks for the chance

  24. Happy Blogoversary! Thanks for the contest. I’d love to win The Shoemaker’s Wife. I’ve been thinking about reading it for a long time. A book I read a long time ago that I think fits the description of adult dystopic fiction is A Creed for the Third Millennium by Colleen McCollough. I enjoyed it when I read it, but that was probably 15 or more years ago!

  25. Congratulations on the blogoversary! I love your blog and hope you continue to write it for many years to come. Don’t enter me into the giveaway – I’m trying to reduce the number of books I own at the moment 🙂 but if you are after more dystopian I recommend The Death of Grass.

  26. Beth DiIorio says:

Congratulations on 3 years of blogging, Judith! Such a fulfilling accomplishment. Your blog is one of my true favorites!

Since I have had Ready Player One by Ernest Kline on my list forever – and you gave it 5 stars – that would be my pick 🙂
    I tweeted @bookdout
Since I don’t really read dystopia, I know very few titles but Australian author Marianne de Pierres Parrish Plessis series should qualify.

Of all bloggers I know, you are super fast and prolific!! 1100 posts! Wow.

  39. Roof Beam Reader says:

Happy, happy blog-o-versary! Or however one wants to spell it. Congratulations to you! You’re still one of my favorites and I’m so glad you’re still hard at work.

Let’s see – the book I would recommend be added to your dystopia list is The Wanting Seed by Anthony Burgess (which also has not been mentioned by another commenter, yet). I actually liked it more than A Clockwork Orange (which has been mentioned a couple of times and which I also loved, though it is a tough read emotionally and mentally).

The book from your 4-stars list that I’d love to win is Annabel by Kathleen Winter. I’ve had my eye on that book for a long time.

Thanks for the chance & congrats again!

  40. Heather S says:

    Happy Blogoversary!! cCongratulations!

  42. Anubha says:
