Weekly Reading Roundup

The week
First week of school for the boys, they seem to be fine. I’ve been busy editing, had a few people take up the offer of a free edit of their first chapter. Then I had some new customers. No rest for the wicked!
Also had a fun meeting with my fellow school library volunteers, discussion the roster for the coming year. And then, Wednesday, it started again, handing out many books to whole classes, covering books with plastic protection. Me and the other volunteer didn’t even get time for a proper chat! 🙂
Books I finished in the last week: 1 and a DNF
Dubbele stilte [Double Silence] by Mari Jungstedt. A Swedish thriller in which several connected people are murdered or lost on an island. 4 stars
Goat Mountain by David Vann. A favoriete writer but still a DNF. It was too much and too little for me.
Books I’m reading & planning to read
A Beautiful Truth has been on my to-read-for-this-week for a few weeks now! I hope to finally read it this coming week. But I’m also starting a game on Shelfari, where we read books with certain tags. So, anything can happen…

Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson. Non-fiction. The author (American) travels through his adoptive country, England. Hilarious! 5 stars
The Long Shadow by Liza Marklund. Thriller, a journalist is researching the deaths of a Swedish family in Spain and uncovers a lot more while she’s at it. 4 stars
De huisvriend [Friend of the Family] by Bertram Koeleman [Dutch]. A butler living with a man who likes solitude feels their life is threatened by the arrival of a new friend of the family. 4 stars
Het reservaat [The Reservation] by Liselotte Stavorinus. Thriller, Dutch. A woman moves with her family to a rich neighborhood, where one of the ladies befriends her. But is she really a good friend? 4 stars

I enjoyed A Beautiful Truth, not my favourite, but definitely gets you thinking. Is the Liza Marklund novel you read one of the Annika Bengtzon books? I’ve read a few of those, I like the series.
Shan, yes, it’s one of the Annika books. I’ve read most of them and like them. Well, I sure hope I enjoy A Beautiful Truth enough!
Ow curious about your thoughts on Goat Mountain. I did finish it but am still in doubt. As this is an author you usually like and it was my first by him I really like to know why you stop reading this and what is so brilliant about the others! (will you be going on Thursday to the signing? I am still not sure)

Ciska, no, where is that signing again? Amsterdam is too far for an author I gave up on. If it was nearer, I’d love to hear more about the novel, though. I thought it was too indulgent with too little real story.
How does the Shelfari game work? It sounds fun!
Athira, it’s a long story, but we need to collect pairs or straights of tags that we can then discard of. You collect them by reading books with those tags. It’s quite complex. I won’t get any further than 25% of a book before the game is finished, I fear.
That sounds intriguing, but yeah, I can see that the game could get over before I’m anywhere, lol!
Our neighborhood went back to school today, a month later than some other states in the US.
I hope you are enjoying the editing business, and that it’s rewarding for you. How exciting that you have found a way to turn something you love into work.

I’m loving the editing business, just got a customer today that will keep me busy for a few weeks. As in, I have to fit it in around other work. Not a bad situation to be in. 🙂
You’ve been really busy Judith!! Sounds like a lot of great things going on for you.
I’ve been curious about Goat Mountain but your DNF pushes me more to the “skip it” side. Seems people are appreciating the writing but that the story is just too much.
Trish, that’s right. The writing of Goat Mountain is pretty good (as usual) but the story is too slow.
