Further information about the books

Cover 1 – Spadework by Timothy Findley. Sent in by Nat of In Spring It Is The Dawn. She says: “The writing felt somewhat masculine, but the story moved right along and wasn’t overly predictable. Apparently this is not his best work, so I look forward to reading more”. She gave it 3/5 stars.

Cover 2 – The Abductors by Stuart Cloete. Sent in by Cindy of The Only Cin. She says: “This book was recommended to me years ago by a second hand book dealer. I haven’t read it.”

Cover 3 – The Likeness by Tana French. Sent in by Diana of Bibliophile by the Sea. She hasn’t read it yet.

Cover 4 – Fifth Business by Robertson Davies.  raidergirl of An Adventure in Reading. She read and enjoyed it. Her review is HERE.

Cover 5 – Abarat by Clive Barker. Sent in by Her Royal Orangeness of Only Orangery. She didn’t read it.

Cover 6 – Parasite Eve by Hideaki Sena. Sent in by Leslie of Under My Apple Tree. She says: “This is a Japanese biochemical horror novel that I traded for at the train station book swap, hopefully the translation is good.”

Thanks for your contributions, everyone!

Further information about the competition

Each week for 6 weeks, I will show you 6 covers and you have to choose the ugliest one. Every week there will be one winning cover (in case of a draw, I will have the final say). The seventh week, we’ll have the 6 winning covers back, and the most ugly, absolutely impossibly awful cover will win the competition. This book will have the questionable honor of being the ugliest book we know of.

Your task is to vote for the ugliest cover each week. Of all participants who chose the final, winning, cover in one of the first 6 rounds, one will win a book of their choice. Hopefully one of the books displayed will suit you (an awful cover doesn’t mean an awful book), and otherwise, you can choose any other book from the Book Depository (or other solution if the BD doesn’t deliver in your country) up to a maximum value.

I can still use ugly covers, so please look on your shelves and send in the most awful one(s): jh303015 at gmail dot com.

Do fill out the form! Anyone can enter!

Psst! Is there a cover here that you secretly like?

Further information about the books

Cover 1 – My Sister, My Love by Joyce Carol Oates. Sent in by Lu of Lu’s Raves and Rants. She says: “I have not read it.  A friend of mine passed it on to me, and said it was good.”

Cover 2 – Mappa Mundi by Justina Robson. Sent in by Leslie of Under My Apple Tree. She says: “Nope, haven’t read it yet.  Mappa Mundi is one of the books on the 2011 Women of SciFi discussion list.”

Cover 3 – Catalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson. Sent in by Jordyn of Ten Cent Notes. She says: “This was the first book of hers I read and I did NOT read the edition with this cover. I have absolutely no idea what the cover has to do with the story (though granted, it has been like ten years since I read it) and the cover is just… confusing. Weird. Ugly.”

Cover 4 – Life Story by Alison Habens. My entry for this week. I didn’t buy this book for its cover! I had read and enjoyed two other books by this author. This book was slightly disappointing compared to the other two hilarious books.

Cover 5 – Girl’s Night Out by Kathy Lette. Sent in by Cindy of The Only Cin.

Cover 6 – No Love Lost by Margaret Allingham. Sent in by Dorte of DJs Krimiblog.

Further information about the books

Cover 1 – Morbito: Guardian of the Spirit by Nahoko Uehashi. Sent in by Novia of Polychrome Interest. She says: “I don’t like this cover because it lacks creativity. The cover is just an edited picture from the anime…no originality AT ALL.”

Cover 2 – Crime of the Century: The Lindbergh Kidnapping Hoax by Gregory Algren and Stephen Monter. Sent in by Jordyn of Ten Cent Notes. She says “I’m about 98% sure this is the book I read on the Lindbergh kidnapping when I was in fifth grade, though I could be wrong. The cover looks familiar and horrible. It kind of hurts to look at it.”

Cover 3 – Lies of Silence by Brian Moore. Sent in by Nadine of The Books of Life. I read this book years ago and thought it was very good. 4 stars.

Cover 4 – Shampoo Planet by Douglas Coupland. Submitted by Leeswammes. I say: “I read it and enjoyed it! I wasn’t captivated. Not Coupland’s best book. 3 stars.”

Cover 5 – The End Of My Tether by Neil Astley. Sent in by Gary of Parrish Lantern.

Cover 6 – Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse. Sent in by Anna of Anna’s Leesreis. She says: “This cover (wrongly) suggests soft-porn and it’s very ugly.”
