Don’t Look Now by Daphne Du Maurier. Five long-ish short stories all with a twist. Good fun to read. 4/5

Low Town by Daniel Polansky. In an alternate world, a former policeman is a drugs dealer in a criminal part of town. He gets the chance to investigate the murders of some girls to prove that he wasn’t involved himself. An almost real, but fantasy world, with swords and magic. 4/5

A Twitter Year by Kate Bussmann. A year of events in tweets. Divided into current affairs, celebrity, sports, etc. Good fun for the devoted tweeter. 4/5

Vissen veranderen bij kou van zwemrichting [Fish Change Swimming Direction when Cold] by Pierre Szalowski. A Canadian boy wants to stop his parent from divorcing and calls the sky for help. Several days of ice rain ensue and the whole town is in disarray. 5/5

Little Children by Tom Perrotta. About some thirty-something parents and their affairs. And a paedophile who’s moved into the area. 5/5

The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey. A Jane Eyre in the 1960s. Gemma, an orphan, is sent to boarding school by her awful aunt, ends up working as an au pair in the Orkneys, and meets the lord of the manor. Need I say more? A good read.

What a great week – mine wasn’t nearly so accomplished!

A great list as per usual, my books of the moment are Nuala Ní Chonchúir’s The Juno Charm, a wonderful collection of poetry that manages to be both visceral & yet ethereal & The end of my tether by Neil Astley, which is part Detective tale, part myth & magic & wholly insane.

  3. I LOVED Little Children. Of all the Perrotta books I’ve read, that one was my favorite. I have the movie, too.

I’d like to read The Flight of Gemma Hardy…I read another book by Margot Livesey and enjoyed it.

    Have a great week!

Here’s MY MONDAY MEMES POST and
    MY WEBSITE

  4. The Flight of Gemma Hardy sounds lovely. I will be adding this to my list!

While I’m not sure I can say I loved Little Children… I loved it. A dark book!

    Have a wonderful week 🙂

    • Leeswammes says:

Mari, yes, I’m sure you’ll love Gemma Hardy. It’s a modern(ish) Jane Eyre who goes to a Dickensian boarding school. I’m very much enjoying the book.

  5. A Twitter Year sounds cool 🙂 Isn’t it cool that social networking is becoming such a intregal part of books now? The new Jay Asher book is pretty much all about Facebook 🙂 Awesome week!!

    Merry Christmas!

  7. Chris says:

Gemma Hardy sounds great! I enjoyed The Leftovers by Perrotta and heard his other books were good. Don’t Look Now and Low Down look great, too. Thanks!

  8. Vasilly says:

Gemma Hardy is a book I’ve seen many bloggers write great things about. I’m glad you loved the Alexie book. It’s one of my favorites. Happy reading!

  9. Leslie says:

Another great week in reading for you. I’ve been doing, ummm, other things, and only read 2.5 books. I guess a half book counts!

  10. Pussreboots says:

I’m on vacation and the time off has given me time to finish my GoodReads challenge. Please come see what I’m reading.

  11. Little Children sounds really intense. Yeesh! And i loved Part-Time Indian too! It’s amazing it gets challenged so frequently in the U.S.

  12. Some great reviews. You will have your plate full with the challenges and with running one. Should be lots of fun.

  13. Trish says:

Have been hearing SUCH great things about Little Children. Think I might have it on my shelf at home but am not sure. Sad, huh?! 😉

Not reading anything this week. Would like to get back to Affinity but with holiday guests coming into town, I’ll be preparing for them.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas Judith!

  14. JoV says:

5 books a week is too amazing!

    • Leeswammes says:

Jo, I had read 3 of them half already. But it was still a good week. I like it when the reading goes quick (rather than being ‘stuck’ in the same book for 5 days).
